The Land Around Us is a sculptural work that embodies the forces shaping the ecological environment around Singleton. Inspired by the extensive networks of bushland and forests surrounding the Hunter Valley, the artwork illustrates the interconnected relationship between nature and humanity. At its core, The Land Around Us symbolises this symbiosis through two arcs bound by a horizontal line. The arcs represent the interplay of climate, geology, and the valley floor—once submerged beneath ancient seas and now rich with life and history.
The horizontal line conveys a timeline spanning past, present, and future, emphasising human intervention, growing awareness, and the responsibility of preservation. The sculpture’s delicate balance—securely anchored yet appearing to touch the earth lightly—reflects the fragile equilibrium of the ecosystem. Through its graceful curves and evocative symbolism, the work invites viewers to reflect on the passage of time and the resilience of nature. It stands as a reminder of humanity’s deep connection to the land and its shared responsibility to protect its beauty and biodiversity for future generations.
